PRINCIPALS THOUGHT
I am constantly amazed at the wide range of opportunities our children are exposed to throughout their schooling these days and the skills that they develop as a result. Here are some recent examples ……
By taking part in the mask parade, our junior children not only utilised their creative talents, they participated in a very worthwhile local event, developing a sense of citizenship and community pride.
The recent Science Fair sparked imagination, inquiry and a glimpse of the possibilities around us.
Training for the Athletics, students are becoming fitter, more agile and competitive and our Touch and Volleyball teams will learn the value of being part of a team, experiencing wins and losses and working towards a common goal.
The School Council are currently planning a whole-school Pet Day, brainstorming ideas, fine-tuning the programme, making signs, certificates and notices, organising helpers, equipment, catering ……. Lots of problem-solving, time-management and enthusiasm required here!
Our children really are developing skills for life and the confidence to play an active role in their community. Thank you for supporting this learning. I hope that like me, you are gaining just as much from their schooling experience as they are!

Spuds
Well – The spuds are now all sold. What a fantastic effort all round, from sowing to harvesting and bagging, and then of course selling. It has been a wonderful fundraising activity and one that the Board is keen to support again next year. It’s a case of many hands make light work and we’d like to encourage anyone that is interested in helping with this activity to let Sharon know in the office so that we can spread the load a little wider next year.
Once the final expenses have been calculated we will let you know the final profit figure!!!!!!!
Drag Racing – HELP!!!
Please ring Heidi Ph 526 7102 if you are available to help out with gate sales at the drag racing meeting on Saturday 1st November (rain date Sunday 2nd November). This is a fun way to spend half a day and raise funds for the school at the same time. So, don’t be shy – give Heidi a call.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Meila Wilkins who was a dancing member of a team that won the 2008 National Hip Hop School Championship (Team Event). Her team (from The Fargar Dance Academy) now has the opportunity to travel to Australia to compete internationally!!!!!!!! Awesome!
Meet the Locals Competition
As part of Conservation Week Room 5 took photographs of native plants and animals around the school. They entered them in the TDC Meet the Locals Competition and Josh Wilson and Fletcher Frater were runners up in their age category. They received an awesome prize package and have their photos displayed in the school foyer.

PUMP
Pump has now finished for the year, allowing the hall to be freed up in the mornings for the many planned school-wide activities this term.

Book Fair
Tuesday 28th – Friday 30th October
Come along and support your school.
We have books for sale from Total Learning. The books are available to purchase for you, your child or to donate to the school library.
There is also a catalogue you can order from.
Books are great Christmas pressies ……………. (there is only 9 weeks to go!!!)
The hall where the book fair is being held will be open for viewing and purchasing on:
Tuesday 3.00 – 4.00pm
Wednesday 8.15 – 8.50 pm and 3.00 – 4.00 pm
Thursday 8.15 – 8.50 pm and 3.00 – 4.00 pm
Friday 8.15 – 8.50 pm and 3.00 – 4.00 pm
This is a terrific fundraiser for our library as we get 20% of the proceeds, which will go to purchasing books.

What a Night!
Congratulations to all those students and parents that took part in the Nelson Arts Festival Mask Parade on Friday night. The weather looked to put a damper on the night however the children’s enthusiasm and dedication shone through as we marched and chanted our way down the street. It was an awesome night full of wondrous sights and the students did us all proud…WELL DONE everyone J
A big THANK YOU to all the parents who helped transport students to and from the Parade and those who stayed to support us, we couldn’t have done it with out you.
A special mention to our personal cheer team who seemed to pop up around every corner J You know who you are.

Reminders
School T-Shirts
Touch rugby is now underway, and it is timely to remind families that school shirts are to be worn by the children for all interschool activities. The shirts can be purchased from the office for $22.00.
Sunhats
Children must have their sunhats at school everyday during Terms 4 and 1. Well done to those who had them all ready to go last Monday! Wide-brimmed hats, bucket or legionnaire styles are acceptable, caps are not. School bucket hats are available from the office, in four sizes, for $14.00.
Please ensure children have a suitable named hat or they will need to stay in shaded areas during playtimes
Dental Notice
If your child requires dental care please contact The Dental Clinic at Parklands School on 528 1017.
For urgent care out of school hours, please contact a contracting dentist.
Bus Passes
Invoices have been sent home with the children of those families that live outside of our school bus zone, and whose children catch the bus either to or from school.
Payment must be made by Friday 31st October.
Please notify the office (there is a bus notebook in the office to be completed) if your child will not be catching the bus home. The bus has been delayed in getting away several times recently due to the bus monitors trying to locate bus children that have been picked up without notification.
All school donations, activities and MOTEC fees etc can be paid by Direct Credit to the school or can be set up on automatic payment. Please ensure your Payee Details have the family name and the fees you are paying.

SPORTS NEWS/RESULTS
Touch rugby and volleyball get under way this week. Many of our students are involved in these sports, which is fantastic! Unfortunately for those interested in playing indoor soccer, there were not enough teams registered to form a league. Registration fees will be refunded, but we are going to organise lunch time games here at school for those that are keen to play.

Uniform Proposal
Please make sure that you provide your feedback on whether or not Lower Moutere School should have a compulsory uniform.
Samples of what our school uniform could look like are still on display in the foyer. It is important that you take the time to have a look and complete the Uniform Feedback Form and place it in the box in the office before 2.30pm this Friday 31st October.
Remember – if we don’t hear from you, it will be taken that you are in favour of the proposed uniform.
Absentee Messages
As more and more families now have cell phones as their only form of telecommunication, we have decided to trial a cell phone number to be used in addition to our existing absentee phone line. This is to allow absentee messages to be text to the school.
The number to text is: 027 339 8801
It is important that you remember to make sure you provide the following details (just as you would on the phone line):
- Your child’s name
- Room number
- Reason for absence
